Resistance Training
what is resistance training?
Resistance training means working,or training, with weights, either free weights or on gym machines by performing simple, repetitive movements you are able to focus work on a particular muscle or group of muscles.
Finding it hard to paddle out?
Need more strength to pop up?
Can’t duck dive very well?
Need more paddle power?
All these elements can be boosted by resistance training, however always remember that surfing movements demand a lot of flexibility and a lifting heavy weights might not be the best route for a surfer.
Heavy weights on a regular weekly basics may leave you stiff with slower dynamic movements, definitely something not needed if you’re a surfer. It would be better to adopt a light weight high rep workout, this will build surfing strength and endurance perfect for when its 6 foot and pumping and you need to get out back where you good stuff is!
If you are planning a resistance training program then aim for basic progression, a well balance training program covering all the major muscle groups and always remember not to over train.
How often should i do resistance training?
Resistance training 2-3 times a week should be fine, incorporate resistance training with the many other types of training available for surfers and you will definitely feel the benefits.
